Oligarchs, Crime, the Underclass, Neglected Schools, and more.

Watch a new interview with David Simon, former Baltimore Sun journalist and creator-producer-writer of The Wire, on Bill Moyer's Journal. He discusses a variety of things such as America’s abandoned underclass, our current oligarchy, and the high level of national apathy. In the mix, he talks about inner-city education issues and crime.

Let’s just say...he gets it.

If you know Simon, pass the word to him about my blog. I’d love to talk to him about what is happening with public education.

Also, please read Senator Jim Webb's Parade article, Why We Must Fix Our Prisons.
"The United States has by far the world's highest incarceration rate. With 5% of the world's population, our country now houses nearly 25% of the world's reported prisoners."
The United States of America has a potentially lethal condition. Consider the above fact and realize that this is just one of the many symptoms.

I came up with an interesting idea, while trying to think of "an intervention for President Barack Obama" in the hopes of coming up with a way of teaching Obama The Truth about NCLB, privatization, test-mania, etc
=====================================
I would ask the Teachers of America to come up with a 53-minute lesson-plan FOR PRESIDENT OBAMA, complete with introduction, objectives, materials, etc.

The Learning Objectives will be for The Student (Obama) to demonstrate Knowledge of NCLB's ACTUAL NEGATIVE EFFECTS, by being able to explain and describe these effects that are, presently, DAMAGING America's Public Educational system, creating segregation, disrupting neighborhood schools, taking away most local control, and hurting families, kids and teachers in a myriad of ways.

If 53-minutes works for many HS students when learning new concepts, than a star student like Obama should pick it up easily!!

If only we had a rich sponsor to offer a $5,000 reward for the Best Lesson Plan to be selected to use for Obama.

If we had even a couple of hundred teachers working on this, we could get it done, for sure.

Somewhere out there is a teacher that can come up with the perfect lesson to reverse Obama's corporate tendencies and steer him over to a more progressive point of view.

Now THAT would be a Teacher-Of-The-Year, IMO.

As teachers, maybe we need to think of President Obama as a student who simply needs educating.

IMO, he's getting an "F" right now.

He needs intervention badly.
